Target Stores
Portland, OR
The remodeled Mall 205 Target store is a 157,000 square foot steel-framed structure. Originally built in the 1970s, the two-story building was found to be deficient when subjected to current code prescribed seismic forces. VLMK performed a seismic upgrade according to the 1997 Uniform Building Code. Strengthening of the lateral system was accomplished through the addition of several new braced frames. The new frames were designed to carry the building's entire seismic lateral force, and also upgraded the roof diaphragm by reducing the clear span. Associated tenant improvements included new steel framing for an escalator and freight elevator, a heightened parapet, and several new canopies.
Originally built in the 1960s, the two-story masonry Jantzen Beach Target was completely remodeled, and a seismic retrofit and upgrade according to the 1997 Uniform Building Code was undertaken. The main challenge was bringing the 147,000 square foot building into conformance with the current code's stringent detailing requirements for wall anchorage and sub diaphragms. In addition to the seismic upgrade, tenant improvements included new steel framing for an escalator and passenger elevator, a heightened parapet and a new entry facade and vestibule. The cost of construction on this project was $7.3 million dollars.
