Christ the King Catholic Church
Richland, WA
The classic design of this 18,000 square foot addition heightens the sense of drama and adds a touch of serenity to this church. Designed to complement the existing building, the two-story addition proved both challenging and complex. The addition included meeting space and a front entry vestibule. An interesting feature was the folding glass partition used to separate the meeting area into smaller spaces. The addition used a radial framing scheme and featured a curved façade on one side with a tower entrance. Large expanses of glass were used to bathe the space in light.
Lateral loads are controlled by seismic loads and are resisted by sheet metal (sureboard) shearwalls at the upper level and concrete or CMU shearwalls at the lower level. Loads are transferred to the shearwalls by steel deck and concrete diaphragms.
