How we got started...

Fred H. Van Domelen founded the firm in March of 1970. Dirk Looijenga joined Fred in 1971 and the company become known as Van Domelen / Looijenga Consulting Engineers. The primary emphasis of the firm at that time was providing quality consulting structural engineering services. Jim Knauf became a Principal in 1986.

Professional services were expanded in the early 1980's to include civil engineering and full service planning and design of industrial site and building projects.

Following Dirk Looijenga's retirement in 1995, the firm's name was changed to VLMK Consulting Engineers, Inc., and new Principals Greg Blefgen, Havlin Kemp and John Brooks were added. Kevin Kaplan joined the management team as a Principal in 2000, and Chris Palmateer in 2001.

Today...

VLMK currently has approximately 35 employees, with registered Professional Engineers in both the civil and structural disciplines. We are currently licensed to provide consulting engineering services in over 20 states. The firm experience covers a broad range of projects, including commercial, industrial, institutional, retail and residential structures mostly in the Northwest, but with projects throughout the country.

Services

As a Prime Consultant (working directly for the owner), VLMK retains and coordinates other professional consultants including architects, mechanical, electrical and fire protection engineers, and other specialists as needed. In this role, VLMK will typically see a project from the beginning conceptual phase, on into design and permitting, all the way through construction and final occupancy. As a Sub-consultant, VLMK works primarily for architects, providing structural engineering services for a variety of different project types (commercial, civil, retail, residential, etc.).
